SUNY-Cobleskill Spoils Mammoths' Florida Opener, 12-8

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- SUNY-Cobleskill parlayed 12 hits, 9 walks and 5 hit batsmen into a 12-8 victory over the Amherst College baseball team Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.

Both teams were playing the initial game of their Florida trip during spring break. Cobleskill improved to 3-8 on the year while the Mammoths fell to 2-1. Amherst faces the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point tomorrow at 2 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth but rallied for three runs to get within a single run. Christian Fagnant drew a lead-off walk from Tiger starter Wyatt Palmer. After an out, Javier Irizarry drew a second base on balls. With two outs, Jack Sampedro hit a sharp ground ball back up the middle that eluded th diving Tigers shortstop and bounded in center field for an RBI-single. With two out, Jack McDermott followed by pulling a ball just inside the first-base bag and nearly found the outfield fence. Both Irizarry and Sampedro scored

* Cobleskill pulled away again, building an 8-3 lead with the help of a four-run top of the seventh inning. The Mammoths answered back again, scoring five times in the bottom of the frame. Joe Boyled led off with a double and scored on a throwing error. It was 8-6 when Jack Dove stepped to the plate and got all of an 0-2 pitch, clearing the fence in left field for a game-tying two-run home run, his first of the season. 

* The Tigers came right back with four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 12-8 lead. Sam Gutierrez had the big blow, a Baltimore chop that got enough air to clear Mammoth first baseman Luke Padian's leap and bound into right field for a two-run single and a 10-8 lead. 

* In the bottom of the ninth, Dove ripped a double to center. With two outs, Charlie LaFrenier was hit by a pitch and Yoon Chae walk to load the bases. The Tigers brought in Tyler Scorzelli to face the tying run at the plate in the person of Boyle. The righty ripped a hard grounder back up the middle, but it results in a force play at second to end the game. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths had 10 hits. Dove led the way, going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and a run scored, a double and a homer. Sampedro was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. McDermott was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and a runs scored. 

* The Mammoths used four pitchers. Tristan Kim started and went the first four. Adrian Caron went two frames, Christian Pedro was saddled with the loss for his one inning of work.
