#19 Amherst open 2024-25 season with 8-1 breeze over #26 Conn

AMHERST, MA — The #19 Amherst College men's squash team returned to action on Wednesday evening to kick off their 2024-25 season. For their first match of an exciting schedule, the Mammoths hosted the #26 Connecticut College Camels at home on the Davenport Squash Courts. 

The Mammoths had a strong showing last year, finishing with a 12-9 overall record and a 5-4 record in the NESCAC, securing fifth place in the conference standings and earning a national ranking of #15. With the addition of a talented first-year class of five, the team is energized and determined to elevate their performance in the 2024-25 season.

Up next: Amherst hold a 1-0 record (1-0 against NESCAC opponents) and is set to compete in the New York Round Robin Tournament. The Mammoths will face two away matches against tough competition: the #25 Hamilton College Continentals and the #31 Hobart College Statesmen. First on the schedule is Hamilton, who also boasts a 1-0 season record. Amherst will take on the Continentals at 10a on Saturday at the Little Squash Center in Clinton, NY.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
  • First-years Flynn Venmore and Fares Khairy earned wins on their Amherst debuts at the #3 and #5 spots, respectively
  • The matches at the top three spots were extended to five sets, with the Mammoths coming out on top in two of them
  • Senior Abhimanyu Gupta fought back from losing the first two sets to prevail in a five-set marathon versus Hudson Dunn at the #2 spot. The match lasted 62 minutes and was the longest of the evening.
