Cui, Hart, and She Secure NEWITTs Title with Trio of Wins

NORTHAMPTON, MA – Sunday marked the third and final day of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITTs). The match was held on the outdoor courts at Smith College, a short journey from Amherst. In the final, seniors Amy Cui and Katie Hart and first-year Tina She sought the NEWITTs Title versus Fiona Lee and Anastasia Samets of MIT.

RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS:

After winning three consecutive rounds, Cui, Hart, and She constituted one of the final two teams remaining in the competition. Playing the same format of rounds as they did in previous days, the Mammoths needed to win two of three matches to win the Final. With fantastic performances, Amherst won all three of them to ease past their opponents.

Senior Amy Cui beat MIT's Fiona Lee in a three-set thriller with a score of 3-6 6-4 [10-8]. Cui fought from behind and displayed impressive stamina to win her third singles match in under 48 hours.
First-year Tina She won her singles match in a more straightforward fashion. She beat Anastasia Samets with a score of 6-4 6-1, dominating the second set.
In the doubles, Cui and Senior Katie Hart paired up to win 8-5 versus Lee and Samets.

UP NEXT:

The NEWITTs constitutes the Mammoths' last competition of their fall season. The team will now begin off-season training and eagerly await their spring season next year. Amherst's first match of the season will be on March 1 in Saratoga Springs, NY. They will take on the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center. Time TBD.
