BRUNSWICK, Maine – In a match that featured several marathon matches, the Amherst College men's squash team picked up a 6-3 win over Bowdoin College to kick off a three-match swing through Maine on Wednesday night.
Four of the nine matches went the full five games and six matches included at least one game that took more than the customary 11 points before one of the competitors won by two.
Amherst, ranked 18th in the nation in the latest CSA rankings, improved to 7-4 with the win while 26th-ranked Bowdoin fell to 3-5.
The Mammoths return to action on Friday, visiting 13th-ranked Colby for a 5 p.m. duel.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* One of the five-game matches came at the sixth spot, where sophomore
Grady Herbert dropped the first game before winning the next two. With the match pushed to a decisive fifth game, Herbert battled to a 13-11 win to secure his sixth straight win.
* Junior
Matthew Granovsky also engaged in a marathon match, taking over an hour before earning the win at the seventh spot. Granovsky was edged by a 12-10 score in the first and third games but won the second and fourth, then picked up a 12-10 win of his own in the final game.
* First-year
Gabe Yu also won his sixth straight match, bouncing back after dropping the first set to earn a 3-1 win at the ninth spot.
* Junior
Abhi Gupta and seniors
Neal Malani and
Yeshwin Sankuratri each won their matches in three-game sweeps.
