MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Amherst College women's track and field team won the Little Three Championship for the first time since 1984, capturing 10 events in the indoor season opener on Saturday at Wesleyan University.
The Mammoths tallied 153 points to end Williams' run of 36 straight Little Three titles. The Ephs were second with 121 points and host Wesleyan finished third with 74 points. Amherst's men's team also won the meet, earning the Mammoths the Little Three trophy for the combined team champion.
The Mammoths are in action again next weekend, competing in the Middlebury Winter Classic with events beginning on Friday (Jan. 19) at 2 p.m. and Saturday (Jan. 20) at 11 a.m.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* Junior
Eliza Cardwell earned Little Three titles in two events, winning her third straight Little Three long jump title with a leap of 5.62m, a personal indoor best, and repeating as 60m hurdles champion in 8.81 seconds. Both marks are among the top 10 in Division III so far this season.
* Junior
Casie Eifrig captured the 400m in 58.69 seconds, a personal indoor best and her first collegiate win in an individual event. Eifrig's time ranks among the top 10 in Division III so far this season.
* Junior
Julia Schor ran a mile in 5:12.69 for her first collegiate win in that event with a time that ranks among the top 20 in Division III so far this season.
* Junior
Anaya Thomas successfully defended her Little Three title in the triple jump with a mark of 10.97m to qualify for the New England Division III Championships.
* Senior
Bethany Martin repeated as Little Three champion in the weight throw with a toss of 11.84m.
* First-year
Leah Smith won the high jump in her collegiate debut, clearing 1.60m on her first attempt and qualifying for the New England Division III Championships.
* First-year
Héloïse Hughes sprinted to victory in a 60m race in which the top four finishers were all first-years. Hughes clocked in at 7.97 seconds in her collegiate debut to qualify for the New England Division III Championships.
* Junior
Ava Zielinski ran the 600m in 1:41.96 for her first collegiate win in that event, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships.
* The Mammoths posted the best time in New England so far this season in the 4x800m relay as Schor, first-years
Daphne Witherell and
Keira Hodum, and junior
Margo Pedersen clocked in at 9:48.72 to win the event.
