Mammoths gain split with Middlebury via 13-2 win in nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AMHERST, Mass. -- Jacob Ribitzki threw a complete game six-hitter and his teammates back him with 16 hits Saturday in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Memorial Field as the Amherst College baseball team posted a 13-2 victory and salvaged a split with NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury. 

Middlebury won the opener, 5-3, and took the series two games to one. The Mammoths improved to 19-12-1 overall and 6-6 in the NESCAC West. They will play in a NESCAC Tournament best 2-out-of-3 quarterfinal series next weekend at Tufts University. Wednesday,

Amherst will play its home finale versus UMass-Boston at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

* The story of the opener was double plays. The Mammoths hit into four twin killings over the seven-inning contest and that helped the Panthers walk away with the 5-3 victory. 

* The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jack Dove blooped a double between the shortstop and left fielder. Jackson Reydel then line dan RBI single into righ to score Dove. 

* Down 4-1 entering the sixth, Amherst rallied when Michael Peralez led off with by drawing a walk, breaking up a string of eight straight batters retired by Middlebury starter Sawyer Duarte. Jack Sampedro forced out Perales at second but Jack McDermott lofted a deep opposite-field fly down the left-field line and it fell just inside the foul line for a double. Luke Padian then grounded a single through the left side that scored both runners to make it a 4-3 game. 

* Dove was then hit with a 3-2 pitch to put runners on first and second with one out, but Reydel grounded into a double play to end the threat. 

* In the bottom of the seventh, the Mammoths loaded the bases with no outs as Javier Irizarry walked and then took third when Christian Fagnant lined a single to right. Jack Boyle drew a walk to load the bases, but Panther Andrew Gatland came on to strike out pinch hitter Ben Smith and induce Sampedro to ground into a game-ending double play. 

* Nicholas Giattino took the loss for Amherst, going six innings and giving up seven hits and three walks while fanning seven. He fell to 4-3. 

* Five players had one hit for the Mammoths. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, the Mammoths scored an unearned run in the first and then five in the second to take the lead for good. Reydel led off with a single and Irizarry walked. Smith delivered a single to score Reydel. Irizarry scored on an error as Amherst took the lead. Michael Perales doubled home run for a 4-2 lead. A Sampedro grounder scored another run and McDermott beat out a grounder to short to score the sixth run.

* Dove's RBI single in the fourth made it 7-2. McDermott's sacrifice fly in the 7th made it 9-2. A four-run bottom of the eight accounted for the final score. Boyle had an RBI single in the frame, Sampedro an RBI double and McDermott an RBI single. 

* Ribitzki was dominant in the victory, tossing eight straight shutout frames after the first inning. He threw 114 pitches, allowed only six hits while walking just one and striking out three. In the six, he allowed singles to the first two hitters but retired the next three batters in a row to quell the uprising, ending the frame with a strikeout. He improve to 3-2. 

* Boyle was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Reydel was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Sampedro was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Perales was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. McDermott hit 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Padian was 2 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored.
