Alton Machen wins 110m hurdles at Collier Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Alton Machen of the Amherst College men's track and field team won the 110m hurdles as the Mammoths competed at the Sean Collier Invitational on Sunday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Steinbrenner Track, taking on a strong field that included athletes from all three NCAA divisions.

The Mammoths are back in action next Saturday (April 29), competing at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Connecticut College with action beginning at 9 a.m.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Machen ran a season-best time of 15.39 seconds to top a field of 10 in the 110m hurdles and claim his first win in a collegiate track event with a time that ranks in the top 20 among New England Division III athletes so far this season. First-year Zach Villegas ran a personal-best time of 17.91 seconds to place seventh in the event.

* First-year Paolo Canigiula posted a personal-best time in the 3000m steeplechase, posting a time of 10:37.13 to place third.

* Senior Max Spelke placed fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.10.

* First-year George Cahill ran a season-best time of 4:00.60 to rank ninth in the 1500m with senior Keon Mazdisnian placing just behind him with a personal-best 4:00.83 in just the second collegiate race at that distance for each.

* Junior Braedon Fiume finished ninth in the 800m, clocking in at 1:57.12.

* Senior Jack Renda finished ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 37.83m.
