Charlie Spurrell places second in hammer throw as Mammoths compete at Smith, Connecticut College

First-year Charlie Spurrell of the Amherst College men's track and field team placed second in the hammer throw at the Carla Coffey Invitational at Smith College, while several distance runners competed at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College on a busy Friday for the Mammoths.

Through just 3 of 20 events at Smith, the Mammoths sit in sixth place with 10 points out of seven teams in action Friday as Tufts leads the way with 33 points.

The Mammoths, ranked third in the Mideast Region in the latest USTFCCCA rating index, will be back in action at Smith tomorrow (Saturday, April 15) with events beginning at 9 a.m.

COFFEY INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* After breaking the Amherst record in his collegiate hammer debut last week, Spurrell placed second in the hammer at Smith with a throw of 47.97m.

* Competing in his first javelin event of the outdoor season, senior Max Spelke placed seventh with a mark of 43.12m.

* Three Mammoths sit in the top eight of the decathlon with half of the events contested on Friday. Senior Jack Trent ranks third with 3,492 points, including the top mark of 12.35m in the shot put and personal bests in the other four events, posting times of 11.49 seconds in the 100m dash, 51.52 seconds in the 400m, a 6.48m long jump and a 1.85m high jump. Competing in their first collegiate decathlons, first-year Zach Villegas ranks sixth with 2,848 points, including personal bests in the long jump (6.09m) and shot put (10.55m) and sophomore Alex Robin is eighth with 2,782 points after clearing 1.91m to win the high jump and setting a personal best of 5.57m in the long jump. The decathlon concludes on Saturday.

SILFEN INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* Running his first collegiate 10k, first-year George Cahill finished sixth in the 10,000m with a time of 31:31.91, just ahead of sophomore Luke Munch, who placed seventh with a personal-best 31:40.78, both times that rank in the top 20 in New England Division III so far this season.
