Cui reaches semifinals at ITA Regional Championship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Sophomore Amy Cui made a run to the semifinals, winning four singles matches to highlight action for the Amherst College women's tennis team at the ITA Division III New England Regional Championships, hosted this weekend at the Hunt Tennis Center at Williams College.

The ITA Regionals wrap up the fall season for the Mammoths, who will return to the courts in March when the dual meet season gets underway. The Mammoths will be seeking a return trip to the NCAA Championships.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS:

* Cui was seeded sixth in the 64-player A singles draw and opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sasha Borkov of Curry. Cui battled to three-set wins over Josephine Kimball of Trinity in the round of 32, Annabelle Siegel of Williams in the round of 16 and Matia Cristiani of Babson in the quarterfinals before falling to second-seeded Olivia Soffer of Babson, who went on to win the tournament, by a 3-6, 2-6, score.

* Cui reached the quarterfinals of the 48-team doubles draw alongside fellow sophomore Katelyn Hart. Seeded seventh in the 48-team draw, Cui and Hart defeated Rebecca Lim and Madeline Suk of Tufts in the round of 32, 8-6, and were 8-3 victors against Claudia Miller and Lulu Wu of Middlebury in the round of 16 before their run came to an end at the hands of top-seeded Caitlyn Ferrante and Sasha Gaeth of Wesleyan.

* First-year Sophie Diop was seeded fourth in the singles draw and reached the round of 16. Diop defeated Juliette Moschella of Babson, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 64, then faced classmate and doubles partner Madeleine Swire in the round of 32. Diop triumphed in the battle of Mammoths by a 6-4, 6-1 margin before falling to Jenny Tian of Williams in the round of 16.

* Swire had earned a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 win over Isabella Hartman of Trinity in the round of 64. Diop and Swire competed together in doubles and rolled to an 8-0 win over Nikki Kintiroglou and Kennedy May of Tufts in the first round before falling to Gena Huang and Sahana Raman of Middlebury in the round of 32.

* Senior Calista Sha also won a match in the A singles draw with a 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 win in the round of 64 over Nathalie van Der Reis of Middlebury before falling to Sophie Wax of Tufts in the round of 32.

* Sha teamed with junior Julia Lendel in doubles and won an 8-3 opening-round match against Wax and Stephanie Woodbury of Tufts before falling to Jane Ladaga and Tian of Williams.

* Sophomore Mia Kintiroglou fell in the round of 64 to top-seeded Sarah Pertsemlidis of MIT but rebounded with two consolation round wins over Sophia Wiernusz of Curry, 8-0, and Kamila Stasiowska of Babson, 8-6.
