Maroons outlast Mammoths, 5-3, in NCAA quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. – In a hard-fought clash that came down to the final two singles matches, the University of Chicago earned a 5-3 win over the Amherst College women's tennis team in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals on Monday night at the USTA National Campus.

The Mammoths, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest ITA Division III rankings, finish the season with a team record of 13-9 after making their 24th appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals since 1995. The top-ranked Maroons (21-1) remain undefeated against Division III opponents this season and advance to face Middlebury in the semifinals.

First-year Amy Cui and senior Anya Ramras teamed up to earn an 8-6 win at #2 doubles and cap a perfect 5-0 run through the postseason.

In the singles matches, junior Calista Sha earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at #5 singles and sophomore Julia Lendel earned a gritty straight-set win at #3 singles in a match that lasted over two hours. Lendel came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the first set, 6-3, and took the second set, 7-5, after breaking serve in an 18-point game with the score tied at 5-5.

While the Mammoths bowed out of the team competition, the season continues for Cui and senior Jackie Bukzin, who will be competing for the NCAA Individual Championship beginning on Friday (May 27) at the USTA National Campus.
