AMHERST Mass. -- It took over 6 1/2 hours, a rain delay and two different sites for the match, but the No. x Amherst College women's tennis team was a dramatic, taut battle with No. 6 Tufts, 5-4, to advance to the NCAA Div. III Tournament national championships in Orlando, Fla.
This is the same Jumbo team that defeated Amherst 8-1 just two weeks ago.
Amherst began the match by earning an important 2-1 doubles lead.
Calista Sha '23 and
Julia Lendel '24 won at the #3 spot, but first-years
Deliala Friedman and
Mia Kintiroglou fell at the #1 spot. At the #2 spot,
Amy Cui '25 and
Anya Ramras '22 battled past their opponents 8-7 in front of a large group of supporters for the home team.
The six singles matches followed the doubles on the outdoor courts, before play was halted by a downpour of rain.
The match was then moved to the indoor courts at Bay Road Tennis Club.
Deliala Friedman '25 and
Anya Ramras '22 gave Amherst two more wins, while the Jumbos were victorious at the #1, #2, and #4 spots, making the match score 4-4. In a long 3-set match,
Mia Kintiroglou '25 prevailed in the deciding match to send Amherst into the Quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4. She won the third and deciding set after being down 2-0 and 3-1. Down 4-3, Kintiroglou closed the set -- and match -- by winning three straight hard-fought games.
After her win, Kintiroglou '25 said: "I'm just so happy I was able to help the team make it to Florida. It was a super tough match mentally and physically, but it was my teammates who got me through it – without a doubt. I have so much love for this team and I'm looking forward to competing hard in the next round."
