AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College Head Football Coach
E.J. Mills recently anounced two additions to his Mammoths' coaching staff, Malik Grove and Laz Mitjans Jr.
"We are beyond fortunate to add two quality coaches like Malik and Laz," Mills said. "I could not be more excited for them to be a part of our coaching staff."
Mitjans Jr. comes to Amherst College from Harvard University where he spent the 2021 season as the Offensive Quality Control Coach. The Crimson went 8-2 and were 2nd in the Ivy League and 22nd Nationally in Points per Game.
Prior to his time at Harvard, Mitjans Jr. spent two seasons at Massachusetts Maritime Academy as WRs Coach/Offensive Coordinator (2020) and RBs Coach/Special Teams Coordinator (2019). Mass Maritime was 6-4 in 2019, their best record since 1999.
Mitjans Jr. graduated from the University of Massachusetts where he spent three seasons (2016-18) as a student assistant working with the Minutemen offensive line, running backs and assisting in football operations.
Grove will coach the QBs and will act as Passing Game Coordinator. He previously was a member of the Amherst football staff in 2018, when he coached the running backs. He spent the past two seasons at St. Thomas University as the quarterbacks coach Grove's quarterbacks threw for a combined 1823 yards and 18 total touchdowns, between three quarterbacks, in his first year of the program..
Grove was named the inaugural Women's Bowling Coach on December 23, 2020, in conjunction with the announcement of the sport being added to the STU Athletics roster. Women's Bowling will begin in the Fall of 2021.
Grove played collegiately at Notre Dame College (OH.). While at NDC, Grove was a three-time All-Conference and an All-Region Quarterback. Grove is also the NCAA record holder for the lowest percentage of intercepted passes (1.29%).
Originally from West Chester, OH., Grove earned his B.A. in Business Administration and Accounting from Notre Dame College. Grove recently completed his graduate studies, earning his degree in Ethical Leadership.
