Mammoths drop season opener in 2OT at Bates, 26-23

LEWISTON, Me. – The Amherst College football team came up short in a double overtime thriller to Bates in its season opener on Saturday at Garcelon Field.

Bates' Marcos Ruiz kicked a 24-yard field goal to lift the Bobcats to a 26-23 victory, capping a 19-0 run for the Bobcats, who trailed 23-7 entering the fourth quarter. 

Amherst controlled the majority of the third quarter, culminating in a 23-7 lead. However, the momentum shifted in the final quarter when Bates' Jack Perry threw a 19-yard pass to Jeff  Viou for a touchdown. 

Next up for the Mammoths is some more NESCAC action against Hamilton College next Saturday at 1 pm. The game will take place at home on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 
* Both teams traded possessions in the first quarter. The game remained scoreless until Bates took a 7-0 lead after a methodical 8-play drive in quarter two. 
* Amherst scored 23 straight in the third quarter with Quarterback Marek Hill leading the charge with three touchdowns, two of which were TD passes to senior wide receivers Carter Jung and Keith Delaney. Hill ran in the other score.
* Bates responded to the Mammoths' rally with a 35-yard passing touchdown, tying the game 23-23 with one minute and 52 seconds remaining on the clock. 
* The Mammoths got the ball back, but were unable to put together a game-winning drive, which sent the game into overtime. 
* In the first overtime, both squads failed to score, sending the game to a second overtime, where the Bobcats drove down the field and Ruiz kicked a 24-yard field goal to give Bates the win.

BY THE NUMBERS: 
* Bates had 20 first downs compared to Amherst's 11
* Bates had possession of the ball for nearly 51 minutes, while the Mammoths possessed the ball for less than half of that span in 24:04. 
* Hill finished 18 of 29 passing for 162 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception. He ran 8 times for 16 yards and a score. Demetrius Smith led the Mammoths on the ground with 54 yards on 12 carries. 
* Jung had 5 receptions for 69 yards and a score. 
* Junior linebacker Carson Skotak led the Mammoths with 17 tackles, 11 solo, and 2 fumble recoveries. Luke Harmon had 14 tackles, 7 solo, with one sack and three tackles for loss.
