Mammoths quiet Continentals in home opener, 23-13

AMHERST, Mass. -- Marek Hill threw for two scores and dashed for another Saturrday, guiding the Amherst College football team to a 23-13 win over Hamilton in its 2025 home opener on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium. 
The Mammoths shut out Hamilton over the first three quarters, driving the score up 23-0 before the fourth quarter. QB Hill and WR Carter Jung led the Mammoths' charge with Hill earning a 57-yard rushing touchdown early in the 1st quarter, followed by two passing touchdowns to Jung in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Hamilton mounted a late rally with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Amherst held strong to close out the win in the its home opener.

With this game, Amherst now improves to 1-1 on the year. Next up for the Mammoths is another home game next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Tufts University.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst opened the game with a 4-play, 74-yard drive capped by Hill's 57-yard rushing touchdown. Following Hudson Fulcher-Melendy's successful kick attempt, the Mammoths had a 7-0 lead just one minute and 24 seconds into the first quarter.


* Fulcher-Melendy kicked a field goal midway through the second quarter to push the lead to 10-0.

* On the defensive side, Jackson Duncan sacked Hamilton quarterback Luke Kurzmun, resulting in the loss of four yards for Hamilton with three minutes and 45 seconds remaining on the clock in quarter two.

* The Mammoths called a brief timeout with 17 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter. Once play resumed, Quarterback Hill threw a passing touchdown to Jung from the one-yard line to send the Mammoths into halftime with a 16-point advantage. Fulcher-Melendy attempted to kick the extra point but was blocked by Hamilton's defense. 

* The Mammoths continued to shut out Hamilton in the third quarter, when Hill threw a decisive 26-yard pass to Jung for a touchdown. Following a successful kick attempt by Fulcher-Melendy, the lead was extended to 23-0. 

* Hamilton managed to get on the board in the fourth quarter, but Amherst's early cushion proved enough to secure the win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths sacked Hamilton's quarterback twice, with Duncan's in the second and Kemit Fisher's in the fourth. 


* Amherst held Hamilton scoreless through three quarters.

* Hill concluded the game with 226 passing yards. He completed 25 of 30 passes with two touchdowns through the air. Additionally, he accumulated 109 rushing yards and scored a touchdown on the ground.

* Jung had 6 receptions for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns.

* Sam Gerber added 8 receptions for 82 yards.

* Carson Skotak racked up 12 tackles.
