Amherst Men's Squash Splits Final Matches of the Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Concluding their team competition, Amherst College men's squash split their final two matches of the season as first-year Adam Lichtmacher '23 picked up the decisive win against Tufts to lift the Mammoths over the Jumbos in a consolation matchup at the 2020 College Squash Association (CSA) Summers Cup Championship on Sunday evening. 

After the weekend of competition, Amherst concludes their 2019-20 campaign with a record of 9-10 overall. CSA Individuals will be the final mark on the season tab, which run from March 6-8 in Philadelphia, Penn.

Saturday vs. Bowdoin 

With the only straight-set win on the day for Amherst, Robinson Armour '22 clinched the top of the ladder with ease, downing Deven Kanwal 11-3, 11-8, 11-3.

Charlie Sutherby '22 notched another win for the Mammoths at #2 when he went up 1-0 with an 11-9 win, but John Miligan answered and took set two, 11-7. All tied up, Sutherby rattled off 11-9, 11-8 decisions to pick up the 3-1 triumph.

The final two wins for Amherst came in similar fashion as both Mammoths dropped their first set before responding with three straight victories to win 3-1. At #7, Pavan Nagaraj '21 battled in each set to top Henry Somerby. After a 12-10 loss in the first, Nagaraj won 12-10, 11-9, 11-3 to close out the match.

At #9, Christopher Zimmerman '20 fell 11-4 to Ishaan George in their opener before responding with 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 wins. Nearly picking up the win for Amherst, Nate Mosse '23 was tied 2-2 with Gannon Leech at #5 but dropped the final match by an 11-5 margin (7-11, 11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 5-11).

Sunday vs. Tufts 

Mitch Ford '20, Zimmerman, and Terrence Wang '22 secured the Mammoths first three wins of their bout with Tufts, but the Jumbos tied things up at 3-3 with wins in the second, fourth, and sixth spots.

Wang (12-10, 11-9, 11-6) and Zimmerman (11-6, 11-8, 11-9) won in straight sets before Ford clinched the first set at #9 over Connor Wind (11-2, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8) en route to his 3-1 win.

The Jumbos went up 4-3 with a straight-set win at #7 before Armour made it all square (4-4) when he downed Kunal Valia 3-1 (8-11, 15-13, 11-6, 12-10) at the top-spot.

With the match in the hands of Adam Lichtmacher '23, the Mammoth went up 2-1 before Sanjeev Jeyabalan forced a fifth match with an 11-6 win. In a grueling final, Lichtmacher prevailed with a two-point win over Jeyabalan, 11-9, to pocket the win for Amherst in their season finale (7-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11).
