Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Purple & White recorded two unanswered goals in the final 10:24 of play as the ninth-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team shut out Trinity College, 2-0 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening at the Koeppel Center.
With the win, Amherst improves to 11-5-4 on the season, while Trinity falls to 6-12-2 on the year. Amherst returns to action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Hamilton College for a 7 p.m. conference tilt.
Trinity had the first near score of the contest two minutes into play, as Melissa Maffeo rifled a point blank shot on target, but Amherst goalkeeper Sabrina Dobbins '18 proved up to the task and turned away the attempt.
Despite holding an 11-3 edge in shots on frame, Amherst was unable to claim a lead in a scoreless second period.
Earning a breakaway with 10:38 on the clock in the third, the Bantams almost snapped the 0-0 deadlock behind a Kelcie Finn breakaway. Gathering a pass from Hannah Oganeku at the offensive blueline, Finn raced into the zone and put a shot on target, but Dobbins stonewalled her attempt.
Responding almost immediately, Amherst broke through with 10:24 remaining in the third period as sophomore Katelyn Pantera notched her second goal in as many games to give the Purple & White a 1-0 lead. Finding Miriam Eickhoff's '19 rebound in the slot, Pantera buried the loose puck into the nylon for her fourth score of the winter.
Adding an insurance goal with 4:47 left to play, Brenna Sullivan '18 cleaned up Jamie McNamara's '19 rebound to net her third goal of the season and help lift Amherst to the 2-0 shut out victory.
