Culhane Nets Two Goals as No. 13 Amherst Edges MIT, 2-1

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Sara Culhane tallied two goals in the span of seven minutes to help lift the No. 13 Amherst College field hockey team past Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2-1 Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Gooding Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 5-2 overall, while MIT falls to 7-2 on the season. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they travel to Tufts University for a 12 p.m. conference bout, while the Engineers next travel to Wheaton for a 7 p.m. game on Oct. 4.

Amherst owned a 6-4 differential in shots on goal a scoreless first half between the two sides, with Culhane putting the Purple & White's first shot of the game on goal 1:45 into the matchup. Collecting the ball in a scrum in front of the net, Culhane blasted a shot from near the penalty stroke mark off the blocker of Cailey Talbot.

Mary Grace Cronin '18 registered another close call for the Purple & White with 20:54 on the clock as she knocked down the MIT goalkeepers clearing attempt on a loose ball at the top of the circle and made a spin move around a defender, but her shot sailed just wide of the net.

The Engineers nearly unknotted the stalemate at the 22:35 mark after drawing a foul and a restart from 30 yards out. Positioning herself directly in front of Amherst goalie Emily Horwitz '17, Bailey Tregoning redirected the restart pass on goal, but Horwitz was up to the task and made the pad save.

Keeping up the offensive pressure after intermission, Tregoning logged another solid opportunity for MIT 6:10 into the second half, getting behind the Amherst defense and forcing the Amherst netminder to make a diving save on her breakaway shot attempt. Collecting her own rebound, Tregoning immediately put another shot on goal, but Caroline Fiore '18 had regained positioning and made a defensive save on the follow-up attempt.

The Purple & White broke through in the 53rd minute to claim a 1-0 lead. Finding the ball at midfield, Elizabeth Turnbull '18 powered a pass towards the stick of Sara Culhane '17 in the circle. Rifling a shot on goal, Talbot recorded the save, however Culhane corralled her own rebound and sent a second shot into the netting.

Rachel Rotteveel kept the Enginer deficit at one with an impressive defensive play four minutes later, earning a defensive save on a shot by Turnbull following a scrum in front of the goal.

Notching a team-leading 10th goal of the season and the game-winner, Culhane struck again with 10:52 remaining to double Amherst's lead as she tipped a shot by Mary Grace Cronin '18 past the diving MIT goalie.

Unrelenting, the Engineers made it a 2-1 contest with a goal in the 67th minute, as Emily Penn collected a pass from Devon Goetz just inside the circle and rifled a shot into the lower right hand corner of the net to help MIT avoid the shut out.
