HADLEY, Mass. -- Junior back Maya Harrington (Highland Village, TX) and sophomore midfielder Katie Savino (Darien, CT) were tabbed 2nd Team All-NESCAC by the conference's field hockey coaches, it was announced Tuesday.

It was the first All-NESCAC nod for either player in their careers at Amherst.

Harrington has started and played in all 16 games for the 8-8 Mammoths this season. A skilled defender, she has also contributed on penalty corners, compiling 2 goals and 2 assists for 6 points this season. The Mammoths have allowed just 27 goals in 16 games to date, or 1.69 goals per game.

Savino is a key to the Mammoths' success not only defensively but also when in transition. She had also started and played in all 16 games this season.

"Maya exudes a love for the game," Amherst Head Field Hockey Coach Carol Knerrr said. "She greatly values the opportunity to play Amherst field hockey, and she brings her best every day. She is relentless with her defensive footwork and tackles, and she uses her speed and skills to help generate attacking momentum. She had a key offensive play in our OT win against Bowdoin where she drew the corner that we ended up scoring on. This is one example of how she plays at her highest gear all the time.

"Savino is an athletic, strong and fierce competitor," Knerr noted. "She lives for the NESCAC battles. She's physically strong, steps hard to the ball, and has improved her distribution and elimination skills this year.  Her presence on the field is a difference maker for us."

Amherst is making it 6th ever appearance in the NCAA Div. III Tournament tonight, and its first in 11 years. The Mammoths are at Stevens Institute for a first-round game. Game time is 5 p.m.
