Guzzi's Two First Half Goals Power Amherst Past Farmingdale State, 3-1

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst women's soccer team downed Farmingdale State College with two Hannah Guzzi '18 goals in the first half and a penalty kick score by senior Emily Hester in the second half helping lift the Purple & White to a 3-1 victory in the non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 4-2-1 overall, while the Rams fall to 2-6-3 on the season. The Purple & White return to action when they travel to Medford, Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take NESCAC opponent Tufts for a 12 p.m. contest.

The Purple & White controlled the pace of play in the first half as they jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at the 3:20 mark. Rubii Tamen '19 gained possession of the ball in Amherst territory and sent it nearly 50-yards up-field to Guzzi who gained inside positioning on a Rams defender before sliding it into the left side of the net for her first goal of the game.

Amherst tacked another point on the scoreboard to double their lead nine minutes later after a Delancey King '18 slide tackle placed the ball perfectly at the feet of first-year Bella Palma who assisted Guzzi on her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Rams posted two solid scoring opportunities in the first half. Farmingdale's lead scorer Taylor Howard looked to have a promising chance to cut the deficit in half with six minutes remaining after beating a defender one-on-one, but Chelsea Cutler '19 came out of the net and cut down the angle before forcing Howard's shot out of bounds.

Following a quick shot fired by Farmingdale 41 seconds into the second half, Amherst answered back with a shot of their own before a Rams' handball was called inside the box rewarding the Purple & White with a penalty kick. Tabbed to take the shot, Hester converted on the kick to give Amherst a 3-1 edge and their final goal of the matchup.

Farmingdale kept up their offensive attacks and answered back with a tally of their own four minutes later as Kimberly LiVecchi powered a shot into the top corner of the goal to notch the Rams' lone goal of the contest.
