Women's Soccer Battles No. 1 Williams to 1-1 (2OT) Draw

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Hannah Guzzi scored her second goal of the season just 51 seconds into the contest as the Amherst College women's soccer team battled archrival and Little III foe No. 1 Williams College to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC matchup at Hitchcock Field.

With the draw, Amherst improves to 3-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 in conference play, while Williams moves to 5-0-1 on the season, 3-0-1 in NESCAC action. The Purple & White return to Hitchcock Field Sunday, September 25 for a non-conference matchup against Farmingdale State beginning at 2 p.m.

Amherst came out strong in the first half quickly gaining control of the ball and finding the back of the net within the first minute of play. Sophomore Maeve McNamara contained the ball on the right wing sending a perfectly crossed ball to Guzzi on the far post who one timed it into the top right corner of the net registering the first goal of the game.

The Ephs had their first scoring opportunity a minute later off the foot of Natasha Albaneze, but Amherst goalkeeper Chelsea Cutler '19 was stellar in the net deflecting the ball away before Audrey Thomas took a quick second shot at Cutler who made an incredible diving save.

The Purple & White gained possession of the ball rifling off two more shots, but Ashlyn Heller '17 missed just wide of the net before Guzzi looked for her second goal on the day but missed high.

With 29 seconds remaining in the first half, Amherst earned a corner kick that landed at the feet of Williams' Erika Jung who dribbled the ball the length of the field before passing it to teammate Jacqueline Simeone inside the 18-yard box. Simeone nearly netted a buzzer-beater goal, but the attempt sailed inches wide of the right post.

Williams controlled the pace of play to start the second half and found an equalizer in the 66th minute through Kristina Alvarado took a through ball from Alison Lu and slotted in a shot past a diving Cutler into the bottom left of the net to level the game at 1-1.

Despite only one scoring opportunity for Amherst in the second half, Cutler and the defense were phenomenal in the backfield as the Ephs registered eight more shots in the second half but could not find a go-ahead goal as the game went into overtime.

Both teams tallied two shots a piece in the first overtime and one in the second, but neither side could find the back of the net as the game ended in a draw hard-fought stalemate.
