Box Score 2 AMHERST, Mass. - Taking the field on Senior Day, the Amherst College baseball team swept Colby College, 1-0 and 9-1, in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 1, Colby 0
- The first game of the doubleheader proved to be a pitcher's duel, with the sides combining for only 10 hits and a run.
- The Purple & White broke the game's 0-0 deadlock in the bottom of the fifth. Following back-to-back outs, Max Steinhorn '18 singled through the left side before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Ariel Kenney '18 took advantage of the situation a batter later, ripping a single to left center to score Steinhorn and give Amherst a 1-0 lead.
- The Mules would threaten to even the score in the final inning, however a clutch throw home by Sam Ellinwood '18 with runners on second and third would notch the second out of the inning and help Amherst secure the 1-0 victory.
- Amherst edged Colby in hits, 6-4.
- Dave Cunningham paced the Purple & White offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, while Kenny went 1-for-3 with the game's lone RBI.
- Matt Garcia was the sole multi-hit getter for the Mules in the matchup, going 2-for-3. Zach Ellenthal and Soren Hanson notched Colby's other two hits of the game, with each player finishing 1-for-3.
- Tabbed with the start, junior Jackson Volle allowed one hit and no runs in two innings on the mound before George Long '17 (4-1) entered in relief, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out one in 3.2 innings to earn the win. First-year Andrew Ferrero earned his fourth save of the year in a four-out closing performance, going run-less with a hit.
- Hanson (2-5) took the loss for the Mules, giving up six hits and a run while fanning seven in a six-inning complete game.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 9, Colby 1
- Amherst packed on the runs after a scoreless first inning, crossing the plate six times in the next three innings before tallying two more in the sixth and a final insurance run in the seventh.
- After back-to-back singles by Steinhorn and Ellinwood in the bottom of the second, Jonathan Ramirez '16 gave the Purple & White a 2-0 lead, doubling to left field to record two RBI's.
- Extending Amherst's lead to three an inning later, Steinhorn sent a sacrifice fly deep to left field to plate Cunningham.
- The Mules would score a run in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game, however Amherst would respond in a big way in the bottom half as Cunningham and Conner Gunn '16 doubled in consecutive at bats to tally three runs for the Purple & White.
- Harry Roberson '18 and Cunningham would each record RBI's in the sixth and Kenny would ground out to score Steinhorn in the seventh as Amherst secured the 9-1 victory at their final home game at Memorial Field.
- Amherst held a dominating 14-7 advantage in hits.
- Cunningham finished a perfect 2-for-2 in the batters box, with a double, two runs and two RBI's. Gunn went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Purple & White, while Ramirez finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI's.
- Matt Treveloni led the Mules offense, going 2-for-4, while Noah Tocci finished 1-for-3 and recorded Colby's lone RBI.
- Riley Streit '16 (4-2) earned the win for Amherst, allowing four hits and a run while striking out six in five innings on the mound. Keenan Szulik '16 tossed 2.1 innings in relief, giving up two hits and no runs while fanning four, before Adam Pinto '17, Nic Meyer '16 and Sam Schneider closed out the game, throwing a combined 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two.
- Jake Connelly (1-6) took the loss for Colby, giving up six runs on eight hits in four innings. Matt Garcia pitched an inning in relief, allowing three hits and two runs, while Bobby Forese and Tommy Forese combined for four innings, six hits, and three runs to finish the game.

- Saturday's doubleheader marked Senior Day for the Purple & White who graduate ten seniors following the 2016 season, including: Dave Cunningham, Pike Goldschmidt, Conner Gunn, Nic Meyer, Adam Pinto, Jonathan Ramirez, Riley Streit, Travis Strickler, Keenan Szulik, and Jason Stein.
- Since their arrival in the Pioneer Valley, the Class of 2016 has amassed an overall record of 106-49 (.684 winning percentage), a 34-14 record in NESCAC West play, and a 22-9 mark at home.
