No. 21 Amherst Blanks Little Three Rival Wesleyan, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 21st-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team netted a pair of goals in the second half to post a 2-0 victory over the Little Three rival Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. 

Amherst returns to action for their regular season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they host Trinity College beginning at 3:30 p.m. With its eighth straight win, Amherst improves their record to 11-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in NESCAC play, while the Cardinals move to 3-8-3 on the season, 0-6-3 in the conference.

Following a scoreless first half that featured a 7-4 shot advantage to Wesleyan, the Purple & White tallied scores in the 53rd and 61st minutes to secure the 2-0 victory. 

The Cardinals opened the second half strong, firing off three quick shots, but Amherst's defense was solid and registered two blocked shots to go along with a save by first-year keeper Erica Sanders.

Amherst got on the scoreboard at the 53:49 mark as Maeve McNamara '19 delivered a perfectly placed pass to Emily Hester '17 who then slid a shot past the Cardinals' netminder to give the Purple & White a 1-0 lead. 

The Purple & White's leading scorer Hannah Guzzi '18 registered an unassisted insurance goal at the 61:51 mark to tally her 11th goal of the season and give Amherst a two-goal edge. 

Wesleyan created seven more scoring opportunities before game's end, but Amherst held them scoreless to claim the 2-0 win.

GAME NOTES
• The Cardinals edged Amherst in shots, 19-15, while corner kicks were balanced at six each.
• Hester and Guzzi led Amherst shots on goal with three each, while Alison Neveu '18, Ashlyn Heller '17, and Sloan Askins '20 each put one shot on target.
• Sanders (1-0-0) made her first collegiate start between the pipes registering seven saves in the winning effort.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Amherst is 9-0-1 of its last 10 games and has outscored opponents 23-4 in the stretch.
• With their eighth consecutive victory, Amherst is currently on their longest win streak since the 2011 season when the Purple & White went 20-1 before losing in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
