A Pair of Askins Goals Lift Amherst to a 2-1 Victory Over No. 18 Conn. College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – First-year Sloan Askins tallied a goal in each half as the Amherst College women's soccer team collected its seventh consecutive win in a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Connecticut College in Sunday afternoon's NESCAC contest. 

Amherst returns to action against Little III rival Wesleyan College on Saturday, Oct. 22 beginning at 12 p.m. With the win, the Purple & White improve their record to 10-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in NESCAC play, while the Camels move to 9-4-0 on the season, (4-4-0 NESCAC). 

Conn. College wasted no time getting on the board, needing just 15 seconds to take a 1-0 lead as Lauren Steele chipped the ball into the nylon off a Alex Baltazar cross.

With 5:02 remaining in the half, first-year Sloan Askins scored the equalizer, launching a ball from 30 yards out towards net. Charging out to make the save, Camel goalkeeper Bryanna Montavalo was unable to get her hand on the ball before it bounced off the grass and over her head into the net.

Amherst egded the Camels, 7-3 in shots in the opening stanza, however Conn. College began the second half strong, with Mia Santana nearly taking advantage of a loose ball. Firing a shot towards the far side post, the attempt sailed just wide.

The Purple & White capitalized on their lone shot on goal of the second half to make it a 2-1 contest in the 82nd minute. Sending a pass across the box to the left side of the field, Rubii Tamen '19 found a wide-open Askins who one-touched a shot into the netting.

GAME NOTES

  • Tamen, Ashlyn Heller '17, and Maeve McNamara '19 each put one shot on frame each for Amherst.
  • The Purple & White outshot Conn. College, 8-7, while the Camels held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore Chelsea Cutler made two saves in the winning effort, improving her record to 10-2-1 overall. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst is 8-0-1 of its last nine games and has outscored opponents 19-3 in that stretch.
  • Askins registered her first and second collegiate goals, including the game-winner.
