Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Striking once in each half, the Amherst College women's soccer team extended its win streak to six as they posted a 2-0 victory over NESCAC opponent Colby College Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
Amherst returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Connecticut College for a 1 p.m. conference tilt, while Colby returns home to take on Bowdoin on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. With their fourth consecutive shutout, the Purple & White improve their record to 9-2-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in league play, while the Mules move to 6-6-0 (1-6-0 NESCAC).
Starting off quick and holding momentum, Amherst controlled the ball and pace of play throughout the majority of the first half, firing off 15 shots to Colby's two.
The first shot of the contest came five minutes into play as the Mule's Aliza Van Leesten ripped a shot on target, but Amherst goalkeeper Chelsea Cutler '19 was up to the task and turned away the attempt.
First-year Sasha Savitsky created an offensive opportunity seven minutes later as she dribbled the ball inside the 18 and drove an attempt towards goal, but Colby's Sam Rizzo made a diving stop as the hard-shot ball bounced off her chest and was recollected for the save.
Taking a 1-0 lead at the 21:36 mark, the Purple & White capitalized on a scrum in front of the goal as Rubii Tamen '19 began the play by sending an athletic slide-tackle shot off the left post. With the ball bouncing back into play, junior Hannah Guzzi cleaned up the rebound, rifling a shot on goal, but once again Rizzo was up to the task and turned away the attempt. Tamen found the rebound and once again sent a shot off the post, however it was the fourth attempt that proved to be successful as Savitsky corralled the ricocheted ball and dished a pass to Guzzi who headed a shot into the nylon.
Following intermission, it took Amherst just three minutes to double their lead, with Guzzi recording her 10th goal the season at the 47:32 mark. Sophomore Maeve McNamara was credited with the assist, as she crossed a perfectly placed ball to Guzzi in front on the goal to help the Purple & White make it a 2-0 contest.
Amherst held the Mules to just one shot in the second half, but Hannah Brozdowski shot in the 73rd minute sailed wide of the net.
