Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Purple & White tallied two goals in the opening 16 minutes as the Amherst College women's soccer team defeated Tufts University, 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play, while the Jumbos fall to 3-2-3 on the season (2-1-1 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 2 when they welcome Bates College to Hitchcock Field for a 1 p.m. conference bout, while the Jumbos take on Hamilton on Oct. 2 at 12 p.m.

Sophomore Maeve McNamara gave Amherst a 1-0 lead 9:22 into the matchup, stealing the ball from a defender and powering a shot over the Jumbo goalkeeper to record her first goal of the season.

Just over six minutes later Hannah Guzzi '18 doubled the Purple & White lead as she took advantage of Amherst's second corner kick of the day. Tabbed to take the kick, Delancey King '18 drove a ball towards Guzzi that was headed into the left side of the goal.

Guzzi logged her second goal of the game and team-leading sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-0 contest at the 65:38 mark. Finding the ball at midfield, McNamara sent a highlight reel pass to Guzzi who collected the ball and rifled a shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Avoiding the shut out, Taylor Koscho converted on a free kick for the Jumbos in the 67th minute, as her attempt from 25 yards out found the back of the goal following a favorable bounce.
