No. 3/2 Amherst Runs by Baruch, 85-34

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Marley Giddins '17 netted a game-high 20 points, and Jackie Nagle '18 poured in a collegiate career-high 17 points off the bench to help spark the No. 3/2 Amherst College women's basketball team to a convincing, 85-34 non-conference victory over Baruch College Tuesday evening at Arc Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst held Baruch to just 25.5% shooting for the game and the Purple & White defense held the Bearcats to single digit points in three of four quarters en route to the 51-point victory. The visitors shot 46.7% from the field, held a commanding 55-27 advantage in rebounds, and registered 10 steals.
  • Giddins continued her hot shooting from the field hitting on 9-of-11 from the floor. Hannah Hackley '18 and Ali Doswell '17 finished with 13 and 10 points respectively to give Amherst three starters in double figures for points, while Nagle (17 points) and Cheyenne Pritchard '16 added 10 points.
  • On the glass, Nagle pulled in a game-high nine rebounds, while Pritchard, Hackley, Haley Zwecker '16, and Meredith Doswell '17 finished with six boards each. Meredith Doswell chipped in six assists, while Jaimie Renner '17 added five helpers to help spark the Purple & White to the win.
  • Veronica Ganzi led Baruch with 17 points, while Jacqueline Kennedy followed with 10 points. Ganzi and Kristen Podlovits collected five boards each to lead the Bearcats, while Kennedy and Alicia Williams followed with four apiece.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The first two periods featured stellar shooting and superb defense by Amherst as the Purple & White coasted to a 44-12 lead at intermission.
  • After a scoreless 2:01 to start the first period, Hackley swished a trey to set Amherst off on a 7-0 run.
  • A jumper by Ganzi gave Baruch its first points of the contest at the 7:04 mark of the first period, but the visitors used a 23-6 run to close out the stanza and extend its cushion to a 30-8 after 10 minutes.
  • In the second quarter, the Amherst defense held the Bearcats to just four points, and scored 14 more to set the halftime score at 44-12.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The second half saw more of the same as Ali Doswell canned a three-pointer just 11 seconds into the third quarter to ignite another massive run by Amherst. The Purple & White scored 27 of the 34 points in the frame, and posted a lead of 52 (71-19) following a layup by Nagle with four seconds left in the quarter.
  • A free throw by Nagle at the 8:09 mark of the fourth quarter gave Amherst its largest lead of the contest (56 points) at 78-22 as the Purple & White pulled away to the victory.

  • Amherst returns to NESCAC and Little III action Friday, January 15 when it travels to Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. in Middletown, Conn.
  • Baruch returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Lehman College at 5:30 p.m. at Arc Arena.
