Singer Nets Game-Winner in Double Overtime as Amherst Bests WPI, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the second time in as many games, Greg Singer '16 delivered a double overtime game-winning goal to help propel the fourth-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team to a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over WPI in non-conference action at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, Mass.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the opening half, Amherst pressured the WPI net early as Nico Pascual-Leone '16, Christopher Martin '17, and Singer each ripped shots that sailed just off target.
  • After the Amherst defense blocked a WPI shot by Kurt Naugler, the Purple & White drew first blood through Milton Rico '16 who received a deflected ball inside the 18-yard box and vollied it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season at the 13:22 mark.
  • Just under three minutes later the Engineers netted the equalizer as Chris Murray threw the ball in from the touch line and Nate Peterson headed it into the goal to even the score at 1-1.
  • Amherst's Jackson Lehnhart '17 and WPI's Anthony Vigliotta exchanged shots on goal, but Connor Hoeckele and Thomas Bull '16 were each able to stave off the attempts and keep the score at 1-1.
  • The Purple & White held an 8-4 advantage in shots, while the sides both placed two attempts on frame. The Engineers held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play.  

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the second half, Amherst and WPI equally shared 12 shots at 6-6, as Amherst held a 16-10 advantage after 90 minutes of play. Both teams registered two shots on target each in the second half and finished regulation with four shots on goal apiece.
  • Hoeckele made a pair of stops early in the second stanza for the Engineers as Singer and Pascual-Leone each fired attempts on goal.
  • In the 82nd minute, Brendan Nemes had a chance to put WPI in front but his shot was blocked by the Purple & White defense to keep the score set at 1-1.
  • With just 1:01 left in regulation, Vigliotta tested the Amherst keeper but Bull was there to turn away the shot and keep the game level forcing extra time.

OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the first period of overtime, Lehnhart took aim with the only shot of the frame, but his offering went wide right in the 92nd minute as the sides entered a second session of extra time.
  • In the second overtime stanza, Brien Hard ripped a shot for WPI in the 105th minute, but his shot was blocked.
  • In the 107th minute, Singer came through with another heroic goal, scoring on a low cross from the right side of the box from Martin, to lift the Purple & White to a thrilling, 2-1 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The game marked the second straight double overtime victory for Amherst, and the second time Singer scored the winner in extra time. 
  • The contest was the fifth overtime game for WPI in its last six games, and the fourth one to go to a second period of extra play. 

UP NEXT

  • Undefeated Amherst returns to NESCAC action Saturday, Oct. 3 when it hosts rival Tufts University for a 2:30 p.m. showdown at Hitchcock Field.
  • WPI is also back in action Saturday with a 4 p.m. tilt against league rival Emerson College.
