AMHERST, Mass. - Despite controlling the run of play and holding a commanding advantage in shots, the Amherst College men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw with Bowdoin College in NESCAC action on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Hitchcock Field.
The Mammoths dictated much of the opening half, holding the Polar Bears without a single shot while generating eight attempts of their own. Amherst's pressure finally paid off in the closing seconds of the period, when
Wilder Judelson found the back of the net to send the Mammoths into halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Bowdoin responded in the second half, capitalizing on one of its few opportunities to level the contest in the 69th minute before holding off Amherst's attack over the final 20 minutes.
With the draw, Amherst moves to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin moves to 1-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference action. The Mammoths return to Gooding Field on Tuesday, hosting Westfield State University at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst controlled the attack from the opening whistle. After holding Bowdoin without a shot throughout the opening 45 minutes, Amherst finally broke through just before halftime. With only 31 seconds remaining in the period,
Mohammed Nuhu set up Judelson, who headed his second goal of the season to give the Mammoths a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
* The Mammoths continued to create opportunities after halftime, but Bowdoin made its limited opportunities count, finding the equalizer in the 69th minute. Patrick Brady and Patrick Ritter combined to set up William Fowler, who finished the Polar Bears' first shot on goal of the afternoon to level the match at 1-1.
* Amherst pushed for a winner down the stretch, but neither side found another breakthrough over the closing minutes as the NESCAC rivals finished level at 1-1.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst dominated the shot count, outshooting Bowdoin 13-2 overall and holding a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Mammoths held the Polar Bears without a single shot in the opening half.
*Nuhu led Amherst with four shots and recorded the assist on Judelson's goal, while Hoefer finished with three shots. Judelson put both of his attempts on target and scored his second goal of the season.
*Bowdoin goalkeeper Oliver King made four saves across 90 minutes to help the Polar Bears secure the draw. Amherst goalkeeper
