Amherst Powers Past Westfield State, 6-2

AMHERST, MA. — Mohammed Nuhu sparked a three-goal outburst with a goal and two assists as the Amherst College men's soccer team pulled away from Westfield State University for a 6-2 victory on Tuesday evening at Gooding Field. The Mammoths overwhelmed the Owls from start to finish, piling up a 33-6 edge in shots and controlling the run of play after halftime, when they answered a 2-2 deadlock with four unanswered goals in a 35-minute stretch. Amherst improved their record to 2-1-1, as they head to an important weekend, facing NESCAC rival, Middlebury on Saturday. Tuesday's high-scoring performance will give the Mammoths plenty of confidence for the weekend.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Amherst struck first in the 15th minute. Nuhu got in behind the Westfield State back line, dribbled past the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into the empty net at the 14:08 mark for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mammoths doubled the lead barely two minutes later. Off a corner kick from Carter Gonya, Edward Wilkey met the service with his head and watched the ball deflect off a Westfield State defender before crossing the line at 16:14 for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Westfield State answered immediately. Ethan Margolis converted from the penalty spot at 17:15 to cut the deficit to 2-1, then leveled the match late in the half. Off a counter attack, Elijah Fursa played Margolis through on goal, and Margolis tapped home at the 40:06 mark to send the sides into the break tied at 2-2.
  • Amherst reclaimed the lead just after halftime. Another corner, this one from Nuhu, found Jacob Dinzeo near the left post, and Dinzeo turned it home off his thigh at 47:48 for a 3-2 edge.
  • Nuhu set up Amherst's fourth goal of the night in the 55th minute. His delivery from the left side of the field found Obed Opoku at the right post, and Opoku directed his header into the upper right corner at the 54:09 mark to make it 4-2.
  • The pick of the night came less than three minutes later. A high ball dropped and bounced near the top of the area, and Finn Hoefer met it out of the air on the volley, burying his finish in the upper right corner at 56:34 for a 5-2 lead.
  • Dylan Price closed the scoring from the penalty spot, converting at the 82:43 mark to seal the 6-2 final.
