AMHERST, MA. — Despite outshooting Middlebury College, 16-10, the Amherst College men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Panthers in a tightly contested NESCAC matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

Middlebury scored the contest's lone goal in the 28th minute, then held off a sustained Amherst push over the final hour. The Mammoths generated nine second-half shots and earned all four corner kicks in the match, but Panther goalkeeper Leon Brody made three saves to preserve the shutout.

With the loss, Amherst moves to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in NESCAC play, while Middlebury improves to 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference competition. Amherst returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26, traveling to Williamstown for a noon NESCAC rivalry matchup with Williams College.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

• The Panthers took the lead in the 28th minute. Will Sawin stepped up for a free kick and bent his effort past the Amherst wall and a diving Trey Sheppard, tucking the shot inside the right side of the net at the 27:41 mark.
• Amherst nearly equalized in the final seconds of the opening half. Mohammed Nuhu delivered a free kick toward the upper-right corner, but Brody reacted with a diving stop to knock the attempt over the end line. Amherst earned the resulting corner, though the half expired before the Mammoths could take it.
• Amherst generated another quality chance in the 70th minute. Obed Opoku settled the ball on the right side of the box and redirected a bouncing effort toward goal, but Brody smothered the shot to maintain the Panthers' one-goal lead.
• The Mammoths had two late opportunities to level the score. Nuhu controlled a ball on the right side of the area in the 78th minute and tried to flick an effort inside the right post, but Brody stood his ground and made the save. Finn Hoefer then sent an attempt wide left in the 87th minute as Middlebury held on for the 1-0 final.

BY THE NUMBERS:
Amherst controlled the overall flow of play, outshooting Middlebury 16-10 and producing a 9-3 advantage in shots after halftime. The Mammoths also took all four corner kicks in the contest, including three in the second half, while preventing the Panthers from earning a single corner opportunity.

Nuhu led Amherst with four shots and two shots on goal, while Hoefer added four attempts. Ohadike recorded two shots, and Opoku put Amherst's only other shot on target.
Sheppard made four saves for the Mammoths, including three in the first half, while Brody made three stops for Middlebury. Amherst finished with 21 fouls and five yellow cards in a physical contest, compared with nine fouls and three cautions for the Panthers.
