Box Score 2 WATERVILLE, Maine - The Amherst College baseball team defeated Colby College, 2-1 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday and followed up with a 5-3 win in game two to complete the sweep.
The Jeffs wrapped up their 2015 regular season slate and are now 23-11 overall, while the Mules finished the year with a 20-14 mark. The Purple & White earned its fifth straight NESCAC Championship appearance and will play Tufts University Friday, May 8 in Nashua, N.H. at 7 p.m.
GAME 1: AMHERST 2, COLBY 1 (7 innings)
The first game of Sunday's twinbill featured a pitching duel between Amherst's John Cook '15 and Colby's Scott Goldberg. Cook earned the win (5-1) and tossed 6.2 innings, as he allowed just one unearned run on two hits and struck out five. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Chris Baldi '17 entered in relief and allowed a single to load the bases. However, the next batter flew out to left field to end the threat and secure the win. Goldberg tossed a complete game and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Four different players recorded a single for the Jeffs; Tyler Jacobs '15 (1-for-3, RBI), Eric West '15 (1-for-3), Conner Gunn '16 (1-for-2) and Andrew Vandini '16 (1-for-4). Jason Buco of Colby hit a double (1-for-4) to lead the Mules, while Tim Corey (1-for-2) and Peter McAuliffe (1-for-3) each hit for a single.
After three scoreless innings, the Jeffs got on the board in the top of the fourth. Harry Roberson '18 led-off with a walk, advanced to second on a Colby error, and reached third on a single by West. With the bases loaded and one out, Jacobs hit an infield single to bring home Roberson. On the next at-bat, Ellinwood brought home the game-winning run with a fielder's choice groundball to bring in Gunn. The Mules cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly form Andy Currier, but were held scoreless the rest of the way.
GAME 2: AMHERST 5, COLBY 3
The Jeffs trailed 2-0 after three innings, but rallied with a three-run top of the fourth and a two-run top of the eighth en route to the win. Ellinwood led all betters with three hits (3-for-4) and three RBI, while Gunn went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, and Brendon Hardin '15 finished 2-for-5. Four others recorded a hit for the Purple & White, while Anthony Spina '17 registered a RBI double.
Riley Streit '17 went 7.0 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in a winning effort (5-1). Baldi and Mike Castiglie '17 eached pitched an inning in relief, while Castiglie recorded the save (4) with a scoreless and hitless ninth inning.
Buco and Ryan Arsenault each went 2-for-4 from the plate to lead Colby, while Buco hit two solo home runs. Tommy Forese hit a double (1-for-4), while Tyler Starks and Zachary Ellenthal had a single each. Gregory Ladd started on the mound and tossed 6.0 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, while Daniel Csaplar pitched 3.0 innings in relief and surrendered two runs on five hits.
The Mules scored a run in the bottom of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead entering the fourth. However, the Jeffs took their first lead of the game in the top of the inning as Gunn got in scoring position with a double down the left field line. Following back-to-back walks, Ellinwood singled to left field to bring home Gunn and Spina, while Jacobs also scored on the play following a Colby error.
After three scoreless innings, Amherst added two more runs in the top of the eighth. Gunn hit a lead-off double and scored on the next at-bat as Spina drove him in with a double to right field. Jacobs then walked and later crossed home on a RBI single by Ellinwood to left field. Colby cut the deficit to two after a solo home run by Buco, but Castiglie retired the side in the ninth to earn the save.
