Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Tied at 2-2 after six innings, Eastern Connecticut State University scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to a 6-2 win over the Amherst College baseball team Monday evening.
The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Jeffs, who are now 13-7 overall this season. The Purple & White scored double-digit runs in six of those seven games. With the win, the Warriors improve to 9-11.
Amherst was led offensively by Andrew Vandini '16, who recorded a game-high three hits as he finished 3-for-4 from the plate. Mike Odenwaelder '16 and Harry Roberson '18 went 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively as the Jeffs totaled five hits as a team. Odenwaelder also drove in a run and has now registered a hit in 19 of the team's 20 games thus far, while Roberson extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games. Jackson Volle '17 received a no-decision after tossing six innings and surrendering just two runs on six hits, while striking out five.
Three players recorded two hits each for the Warriors as Chad Adams, Andrew Scully and Joe Perez all went 2-for-4. Scully and Perez both drove in a run and hit a triple and double, respectively, and three others hit safely to give the Warriors nine hits total. Ron Buchetto started on the mound and pitched a complete game. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Jeffs got on the board early when Roberson led off the top of the first with a single to left field. After stealing second, he crossed home on a one out single by Odenwaelder to left center. However, Amherst's lead was shortlived as ECSU scored two runs in the bottom of the third after a two-run home run by Corey Keane.
Amherst knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth as it took advantage of two Warrior errors. Vandini registered a lead-off single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Yanni Thanopoulos '17. The Purple & White were held scoreless the rest of the game, however, as the home team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win. Scully hit a RBI triple and later crossed home plate on a double by Kyle Hart. Perez hit a RBI double in the inning as well and later scored on an Amherst error.
The Jeffs return to the field Thursday, April 16 and will host Framingham State at UMass. First pitched is scheduled for 4 p.m.
