Jeffs Sweep Framingham State

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Amherst College baseball team swept Framingham State Tuesday by scores of 6-4 and 5-4 during RussMatt Invitational action at Henley Field.

With the sweep, the Jeffs improve to 3-3 following three-consecutive wins. The Rams are now 3-4 overall. Amherst is back in action Thursday, March 19 and will play St. Norbert at 3:30 p.m.

GAME 1: AMHERST 6, FRAMINGHAM STATE 4
(7 innings)

The Jeffs totaled seven hits as a team and were led by Andrew Vandini '16 and Harry Roberson '18 with two each. Vandini went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Roberson finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two singles. Mike Odenwaelder '16, Yanni Thanopoulos '17 and Conner Gunn '16 all recorded a hit and a RBI, and Max Steinhorn '18 also drove in a run.

JR Anderson '18 earned the starting nod on the mound and threw two innings. He struck out two batters and allowed three runs on four hits. George Long '17 entered in relief and pitched five innings, while allowing one run on three hits and two strikeouts.

Amherst scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, but Framingham State retaliated with a two-run top of the second. The Jeffs tacked on two more in the bottom half of the inning before the Rams evened the score at 3-3 after three innings of play.

The Purple & White pieced together a three-run bottom of the fourth as Steinhorn drove in Ariel Kenney '18 with a fielder's choice. The first-year later crossed home on a double by Vandini, and Thanopoulos drove in Vandini with a single to center field. The Rams cut the deficit to two in the top of the sixth, but were held scoreless in the seventh as Amherst prevailed, 6-4.

GAME 2: AMHERST 5, FRAMINGHAM STATE 4 (7 innings)
The Jeffs scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, and held off a late run by the Rams to claim a 5-4 victory. Seven players recorded a hit as the Jeffs totaled 10, led by Roberson's 3-for-3 performance. The first-year also recorded a RBI, while Gunn went 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI, a run scored and a walk. Vandini went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, and Sam Ellinwood '18 went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.

John Cook '16 pitched a complete game and struck out 11 batters, while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. He also walked two.

Amherst trailed 1-0 entering the fourth as they scored four runs in the top half of the inning to take a three-run lead. Framingham State cut the deficit to two after six, but Vandini homered to right field in the top of the seventh, which proved to be crucial as the Rams scored two in the bottom half of the inning.
