Jeffs Swept by Rutgers-Camden in Double-header

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The 23rd-ranked Amherst College baseball team dropped its double-header to Rutgers-Camden Sunday by scores of 5-4 and 3-2, respectively. 

The Jeffs are now 0-3 on the season, while the Raptors open the 2015 campaign with a 2-0 record. Amherst returns to the field tomorrow, March 16 and will play Western New England at 3:30 p.m.

GAME 1: RUTGERS-CAMDEN 5, AMHERST 4
Eight different Jeffs recorded a hit in the loss, led by Harry Roberson '18 who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Andrew Vandini '16 and Conner Gunn '16 each went 2-for-4, while Vandini, Mike Odenwaelder '16 and Yanni Thanopoulos '17 each recorded a RBI.

Keenan Szulik '16 started on the mound for the Jeffs and threw seven innings, while allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He also struck out four. 

Rutgers Camden opened the scoring with a run in the first, but the Jeffs evened the scored in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the fifth, Amherst scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead, but the Raptors scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings before tacking on two more runs in the top of the ninth to claim the 5-4 win.

GAME 2: RUTGERS CAMDEN 3, AMHERST 2
Max Steinhorn '18 went 2-for-2, while Odenwaelder finished 2-for-4 with a double. Harry Roberson '18 finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and Vandini finished with two RBI on two plate appearances.  

Drew Fischer '18 pitched for the Jeffs and threw 4.2 innings. He struck out seven batters and allowed two runs on just three hits. George Long '17 pitched in relief and threw 1.1 innings, striking out one batter and allowing one run.

Amherst scored in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead, but a two-run bottom of the fifth gave the Raptors a 2-1 lead after five. The Raptors added another run in the sixth inning to take a two-run lead. In the top of the seventh, Roberson crossed home plate after Vandini walked, but Amherst was unable to even the score as it fell, 3-2.
