Robertson Reaches Milestone, Jeffs Defeat Wesleyan

AMHERST, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 10/12 Amherst College women's basketball team used a strong first half performance to defeat Little Three and NESCAC rival Wesleyan University, 52-33 Saturday afternoon in LeFrak Gymnasium.

With the win, the Jeffs extend their home winning streak to 108 games and reach the 20-win plateau for the eighth straight season under head coach GP Gromacki. The Purple & White are now 20-2 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals dropped to 9-11 overall and 2-6 in league play.

Megan Robertson '15 rejected six more shots Saturday for 11 total the past two games as she surpassed the 200-mark for her career. The senior is the only player in Amherst women's basketball history to score 1,000 points, record 700 rebounds and block 200 shots. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and scored eight points. Marley Giddins '16 posted a game-high 10 points to lead all scorers and added six rebounds. Ali Doswell '17 registered a career-high 15 boards and her sister Meredith Doswell '17 added 10. Meredith Doswell and Jaimie Renner '17 each dished out a game-high three assists.

Wesleyan did not have one player score in double-figures as Kaylie Williams led the team with nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Jess Cherenza chipped in six points and seven boards, while Cherkira Lashley added seven as well.

Amherst opened the game on a 7-0 run within the first 3:10 of action, but both teams struggled offensively in the first 10 minutes of play. The Cardinals were held to three points up until the 12:37 mark when a jumper by Cherenza cut the deficit to four.

Ahead by eight minutes later, a three-pointer by Hannah Peterson '17 with 5:11 to play in the first half put the home team up by double-digits for the first time. A three-point play by Jackie Browne shortly after cut the margin to single-digits, temporarily, but a pair of free throws by Renner put Amherst back up by 10 as they never looked back. The Jeffs outscored the Cardinals 13-1 in the final 3:08 to take a 37-17 lead at the break.

The second half was an even contest but the deficit was too large to overcome. Amherst led by as much as 28 with 6:05 to play in regulation following a 6-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from Ali Doswell. Wesleyan outscored the Jeffs 16-15 in the final 20 minutes, but the Jeffs claimed the 19-point win, 52-33.

Amherst held a commanding 57-40 led in rebounding and 10-3 edge in assists. Shooting woes hurt both teams Saturday as the Purple & White went 25.4% (15-59) from the floor and 17.4% (4-23) from downtown, but shot 81.8% (18-22) from the foul line. They held the Cardinals to 17.9% (10-56) shooting, 16.7% (1-6) from beyond the arc and 63.2% (12-19) from the charity stripe.

The Jeffs return to the court Sunday, Feb. 15 and will host Middlebury at 3 p.m. in the final regular season home game of the 2014-15 season.
