Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The third-seeded Amherst College women's basketball team made a late second half run against second-seeded Bowdoin College, but feel short in semifinal action at the 2015 NESCAC Championships, 74-66 on the campus of Tufts University.
The Jeffs drop to 23-3 overall following the loss and will await their NCAA Championship fate when the tournament bracket is announced Monday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. Amherst's stretch of seven straight NESCAC Final appearances comes to an end as the Polar Bears (23-3) advanced to face top-seeded Tufts University tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Three players scored in double-figures for Amherst as Meredith Doswell '17 led the way with 14 points. She also added six rebounds, while Hannah Hackley '18 and Cheyenne Pritchard '16 added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Ali Doswell '17 dished out a career-high seven assists and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Bowdoin, who defeated the Jeffs for the second time this season, was led by Shannon Brady with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded one steal. Marle Curle added 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Sara Binkhorst scored 12. Curle registered a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Binkhorst led the team in assists (5).
Trailing 4-0 to open the game, Hackley capped off a 7-0 spurt by the Jeffs with a trio of free throws. However, the Jeffs were held scoreless for the next 4:54 as Bowdoin scored 14 unanswered to take an 18-7 lead with 10:32 to play in the half.
The Polar Bears continued to extend the lead in the closing minutes and a pair of Binkhorst foul shots lifted Bowdoin to a 21-point advantage as it took a 43-22 lead at the break.
Amherst slowly chipped away at the Polar Bear's lead in the second half. Megan Robertson '15 hit a lay-up with 15:22 to play in regulation to spark a 9-3 run, as the Jeffs trailed 52-41. However, Bowdoin retaliated with eight straight points to regain a commanding 19-point lead.
The Jeffs outscored the Polar Bears 15-5 in the final 5:27, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Amherst shot 39.3% (24-61) as a team, and went 26.9% (7-26) from downtown and 68.8% (11-16) from the charity stripe. Bowdoin was 44.3% (27-61) from the floor, 57.1% (4-7) from three-point range and 69.6% (16-23) from the foul line. The Jeffs held a 41-38 rebounding edge and 19-13 advantage in assists, but turned the ball over 18 times compared to 10 for the Polar Bears. The game featured two ties and two lead changes.
