Amherst Hits 18 Three-pointers in 97-39 Rout Over Albertus Magnus

AMHERST, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team hit 18 three-pointers as it rolled past Albertus Magnus College in its 2015-16 season opener Saturday night in LeFrak Gymnasium, 97-39.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst opened the game on an 11-0 run in just 3:18, and went 6-for-6 from the field to start the game en route to a commanding 31-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.
  • The Purple & White went 18-of-34 (52.9%) from downtown, as three players finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond-the-arc: Meredith Doswell '17, Hannah Hackley '18 and J.J. Daniell '19.
  • Ali Doswell '17 led all scorers with 18 points in 20 minutes of action, while Hackley finished with 15 and Marley Giddins '17 dropped 12. Hackley also recorded five rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks. Jaimie Renner '17 dished out a game-high six assists, and Jackie Nagle '18 led all players with nine rebounds.
  • The Purple & White's stingy defense held Albertus Magnus to 25.5% (13-51) shooting from the floor and 25% (2-8) from three-point range.
  • The Falcons were led by Liz Falcigno, who tallied 10 points, while Chelsea Sherrod and Kelsey Pendagast registered eight each. Olivia Bolden grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and Falcigno and Deja Ward dished out two assists each.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst cruised in the first quarter and were led by the hot hand of Giddins, who finished a perfect 6-for-6 with all 12 of her points within the first 10 minutes of action.
  • The Purple & White were lights out early, and finished 13-of-18 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range as they passed the ball efficiently, consistently finding the open player.
  • After a lay-up by Giddins at the 3:55 mark, Amherst took a 21-2 lead.
  • The second quarter was much of the same as the Purple & White's defense held Albertus Magnus scoreless for the first 5:53. Following a made free throw by Nagle with three seconds remaining before the break, Amherst took a 56-15 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The second half featured some new faces for Amherst, as first-year Daniell went a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown in just six minutes of play to total nine points and one rebound
  • Meghan Sullivan '19 scored five points, dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds in the fourth quarter, and finished with nine points total. 
  • Maeve McNamera '19 also saw the court in her first collegiate game of her career and recorded an assist.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst improves its home winning streak to 111 consecutive games. 

UP NEXT

  • Amherst returns to the court tomorrow and will host Farmingdale State (1-2) at 3 p.m.
  • Albertus Magnus has a day off before returning to action Monday, Nov. 23 for a 7 p.m. home game.
