Amherst Cruises to 7-0 Win Over Wesleyan on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. - Seven different players scored for the 16th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team as it cruised to a 7-0 shutout win over Little Three rival Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon on Senior Day during Homecoming Weekend at Gooding Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst scored four goals in the first half and followed up with three in the second.
  • Emily Horwitz '17 posted her fifth shutout of the season with two saves. Surya Adams '18 entered the game late in the second half and stopped one shot.
  • Amherst went ahead 1-0 when Elizabeth Turnbull '18 found her sister Annie Turnbull '16 at the 11:26 mark of the first half. Just under two minutes later, the home team increased its lead to two on a marker from Katie Paolano '16. She was assisted by Annika Nygren '16 on the play, her first of three assists.
  • Annie Turnbull was involved in the next two Amherst goals. After an assist to Mary Grace Cronin'18 at the 18:20 mark, she repaid the favor to her younger sister as Elizabeth Turnbull found the back of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining before the break.
  • In the second half, Nygren tallied two more assists when she found Caroline Fiore '18 and Kendall Codey '19 t the 43:39 and 53:15 marks, respectively.
  • Sara Culhane '17 added another insurance tally late in the game off an assist from Katie Bergamesca '18 as Amherst claimed the decisive 7-0 win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With the win, Amherst claimed the 2015 Little Three title, having previously defeated Williams on the road, 4-0.
  • Amherst honored its five-member senior class prior to the start of today's game – Catie Downey '16, Nygren, Paolano, Abigail Rose '16 and Annie Turnbull.
  • As a class, the seniors have compiled an overall record of 45-16 in four years, including a 27-12 NESCAC mark. During that time, Amherst outscored its opponents 213-70 and won four Little Three titles, while also reaching the NESCAC Semifinals twice.

UP NEXT

  • Amherst concludes its 2015 regular season Wednesday, Oct. 28 with a road game against Trinity (8-6, 4-5 NESCAC). The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
  • Wesleyan wraps up its season Wednesday as well, and will face Conn. College (4-10, 1-8 NESCAC) on the road at 6 p.m.
