Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard Ali Doswell scored a game-high 19 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting as the second-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team cruised in the first half of Saturday's game to pull away with a 97-41 win against Mount Holyoke College.
The Jeffs used a 24-0 run to score 64 first half points en route to their 99th consecutive home win in LeFrak Gymnasium. They are now 2-0 on the year, as they dropped the Lyons to 1-3 overall.
Doswell was lights out on Saturday. The sophomore and 2013 NESCAC Rookie of the Year went 5-for-5 from downtown to lead all scorers. Joining her in double-figures were Cheyenne Pritchard '16, Rachel Boyette '17 and Hannah Hackley '18 with 11 each. A total of 12 Jeffs scored in the opening game of the seventh annual Amherst College Tip-Off Tournament. Jaimie Renner '17 and Hackley dished out five and four assists, respectively, as Hackley also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Mount Holyoke was led by Amber Legare with a team-high 17 points, while Kate Karraker notched 13 on 3-of-9 shooting from behind-the-arc. Nicole DeMarchena led all Lyons players with seven rebounds and also added two blocks.
Ahead by 20 at the 8:17 mark of the first half, the Jeffs poured on 24 straight points in the next six minutes to grab a commanding 60-16 lead. With five seconds left in the half, first-year forward Jackie Nagle hit a lay-up to give the home team a 64-21 halftime lead.
Amherst maintained a commanding lead throughout the final 20 minutes of regulation as it cruised to the 56-point win in its 2014-15 home opener. The Jeffs held a 45-24 advantage in rebounds and shot an impressive 60% (33-of-55) as a team from the field. Even better, they were 13-of-20 (65%) from downtown, as they forced 15 Mt. Holyoke turnovers and limited them to 27.7% (13-of-47) shooting.
With the win, the Jeffs advance to the championship game of the tip-off tournament tomorrow, Nov. 23, and will host Baruch College at 4 p.m. The Bearcats defeated Farmingdale State tonight, 86-64, to advance to the title matchup. They are 1-1 this season.
