Mammoths’ Relentless Defense Fuels 49–33 Win Over Middlebury

AMHERST, MA —

After a long stretch on the road, the Amherst College women's basketball team returned home Friday night to face Middlebury College and delivered a dominant defensive performance. The Mammoths controlled the game from start to finish, securing a convincing 49–33 victory over the Panthers.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst opened the game on a 6–0 run, but Middlebury answered to even the score at 6–6 midway through the quarter. The Mammoths responded with another six-point burst and closed the first quarter ahead 12–7.

  • In the second quarter, Amherst extended their lead to as many as 14 with two minutes remaining before halftime, turning defensive stops into transition opportunities. Middlebury trimmed the margin slightly before the end of the quarter, but the Mammoths still entered halftime leading 27–17.

  • The third quarter featured limited scoring on both sides. Amherst totaled six points in the quarter, while Middlebury totaled five, as both teams exchanged defensive stops and forced turnovers. The Mammoths maintained an 11-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

  • Amherst continued to apply pressure in the fourth, pushing the tempo and generating steals to widen the gap and eventually close out the contest with a 49–33 win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Chase Anderson led the Mammoths in points with 13, followed by Reagan Pahl and Annie McCarthy, both with 9 points each.

  • The Mammoths controlled the boards, out-rebounding Middlebury 44–32.

  • Amherst's defense recorded 15 steals compared to Middlebury's 8.

UP NEXT:

  • This win moves Amherst to a 17–6 overall record (6–3 in NESCAC play).

  • The Mammoths return to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 14, when they host Williams College at 3 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium for Senior Day and their final regular-season game.
