Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College used a goal by four different players, and struck twice in each half as the 15th-ranked Jeffs staked a 4-0 victory over Keene State College in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Gooding Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 10-2-0 on the season and has now won eight of its last nine games. Keene State moves to 8-7-0 overall.
After just over 12 minutes of scoreless action, Amherst drew first blood when Quinn Phillips '17 took a quick corner that caught the Keene State defense off guard. Phillips' nudged a short pass to Emma Rothkopf '15 who drilled the ball inside the near post to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead.
With 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Amherst threatened when Meredith Manley '18 delivered a corner kick to Ashlyn Heller '17 who headed it on target, but Keene State goalkeeper Dannielle Warhall caught the offering to keep the Owls' deficit at one goal.
Hannah Guzzi '18 put the Jeffs on the front foot again with seven minutes remaining in the half when she picked out the run of Rachael Abernethy '16 who was sprinting down the left side of the field. Abernethy controlled the long through ball, but stellar defending in the 18-yard box by Maggie Grayson halted the attack.
Just a minute later, Guzzi slotted home the Purple & White's second marker of the contest when she received a touch pass from Abernethy and then finished with a goal to the far left corner to give Amherst a two-goal advantage at intermission.
In the 49th minute, Sarah Zuckerman '17 directed a free kick to Megan Kim '16, who then flicked it on to Abernethy, who headed the ball towards goal, but Owls' goalkeeper Torrie Crenson, who entered at the start of the second stanza, saved the shot. Four minutes later, Guzzi ripped a shot that just went wide left of the far post.
Keene State answered with some sustained pressure of its own as Alex Haley headed a Jennifer Wilson corner kick over the crossbar, before Taylor Farland blasted a shot that Amherst's Holly Burwick '16 turned away.
In the 71st and 73rd minutes, Keene State was awarded a pair of corners and Megan Costello and Haley each headed the ball over the goal each time, with Haley's shot striking the crossbar.
Brittany Tolla then had an opportunity just inside the 18-yard box but Jessy Hale '16 blocked the attempt, and Tolla's ensuing shot sailed wide left of target.
At the 77:23 mark, Hale lofted a corner kick to Phillips who was crashing the net, and she headed the ball into the net to give Amherst a 3-0 lead.
In the 84th minute, the Purple & White struck again when Alison Neveu '18 crossed a ball to Kim who volleyed it into the back of the net to give the Jeffs a 4-0 lead.
Amherst outshot Keene State, 18-10, and 10-2 in shots on goal. Burwick finished with two saves in the winning effort, picking up her sixth clean sheet of the season.
Warhall finished with two saves for the Owls, while Crenson added four saves.
The Jeffs return to NESCAC action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Wesleyan for a 2:30 p.m. contest with the Cardinals.
