Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Delancey King '18 headed in a corner kick delivery by Meredith Manley '18 just 2:26 into the first period of overtime to break a 2-2 deadlock and give the ninth-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team a thrilling, 3-2 victory over NESCAC foe Colby College on Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 9-2-0 on the season, 6-1-0 in NESCAC action, while Colby moves to 4-5-1 overall, 1-4-1 in league play.
In a thrilling contest that saw each team push across two goals in regulation, the Jeffs netted the game's final tally in the 93rd minute of play as Manley's corner kick found the head of King who provided the late heroics.
Amherst, which outshot Colby, 13-5 in the contest, with nine of those shots occurring in the second half, needed just one blast in the extra frame to seal the victory. Junior goalkeeper Holly Burwick made three saves in the winning effort, while her Mules counterpart Emily Brook turned away four shots.
Manley's corner kicking ability got things started for the Jeffs in the 25th minute of the game as her feed found Emily Hester '17 who headed the ball into the back of the net to set the score at 1-0.
Colby rallied just one minute later when Maddie Tight executed a sensational low cross into the box which Cami Notaro deposited into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1.
The game stayed even through intermission until the Mules notched for the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute when Janie O'Halloran lofted a corner kick to Notaro who was set up inside the six-yard box, and came away with her second goal of the game to give Colby a 2-1 edge.
Less than five minutes later, the Purple & White was awarded a penalty kick, and first-year Hannah Guzzi drilled the equalizer into the top left corner to set the score at 2-2.
With neither team able to find a third marker in regulation, the game went into overtime setting up King's dramatic finish.
Amherst held an 8-4 lead in corner kicks, a 7-5 advantage in shots on target.
The Jeffs return to non-league action on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when it hosts Keene State at 7 p.m. at Gooding Field.
