NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite a decisive 47-19 advantage in shots on goal, the ninth-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team fell short to NESCAC rival Connecticut College on Friday night, 5-4.

The Jeffs (9-5-3, 5-2-2 NESCAC) scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-2 edge entering the third but allowed three goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation as the Camels improved to 8-7-3 overall and 3-5-3 in the conference.

After 19 minutes of scoreless action, Ashley Anctil '17 put Conn. College on the board first, scoring with 54 seconds remaining in the first period. Anctil was assisted by Alexa de la Guardia '15 and Courtney Dumont '14.

Amherst tied the game at the 8:35 mark of the second period off a goal from Melissa Martin '15 but the Camels answered less than a minute later to regain the lead. Olivia Farrell '14 was responsible for the lead change.

Just over three minutes later, Barrett McBride '14 tied the game once again off assists from a pair of first-years, Caitlyn Ryan and Sara Culhane. In the closing minutes of the period, Erin Martin '16 took advantage of a power play opportunity with a two player advantage to give Amherst its first lead of the game, up 3-2 at the 18:35 mark.

The third period was a different story as Conn. College scored three consecutive goals. Cassie Hunter '17 scored within four minutes off a power play while Anctil added her second of the game at the 9:05 mark to put the Camels ahead once again. Seven minutes later, Farrell scored for the second time to put the game out of reach. McBride added her second goal of the day as well with just over three minutes remaining but it wasn't enough as the Camels came away victorious.

Amherst totaled 47 shots in the game including 25 in the second period but could not capitalize on penalties, going 1-for-6 on power plays. Conn. College shot just 19 times but was efficient in power play situations, finishing 2-for-3.

The Jeffs are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 1, to face Conn. College again in a rematch of tonight's game beginning at 3 p.m.
