Box Score 2 AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College softball team earned a 4-2 win over Keene State in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader, but the Lord Jeffs suffered a 9-7 loss in the nightcap for their first setback of 2012.
The longest win streak in Amherst softball history finally came to a halt at 22 games, as the Lord Jeffs (22-1) had been the last undefeated team remaining in Division III. The Owls had their win streak snapped at nine games in the opener but were able to rally and move to 10-2 on the season.
Sara Stocklinski '12 stood out for Keene State by going 6-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored in the two games combined, while Carly Dudzik '12 was 4-for-5 with a pair of walks for Amherst.
The Lord Jeffs will not return to action until Wednesday, Apr. 11, when they host Western New England University in a pair of non-conference games. The Owls will host third-ranked Eastern Connecticut State (15-1) tomorrow in a Little East Conference doubleheader.
Dudzik got Amherst going in the first game by leading off the bottom of the third with a double to center, coming around to score when Kelsey Ayers '15 singled to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead. The Owls pulled ahead in the fourth when a Stocklinski triple was followed by a towering homer from Laura Chandler '12, who cleared the scoreboard in left field for a 2-1 Keene State advantage.
The Jeffs tied the game at 2-2 in the home half of the fourth on a Dudzik RBI single. They would push across two more runs in the fifth when Donna Leet '15 doubled in Kaitlin Silkowitz '14 before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Reilly Horan '13. The Owls put runners on second and third with nobody out in the seventh, but Theresa Kelley '13 got out of trouble and closed the game with a strikeout.
Kelley (12-0) struck out eight without walking a batter, scattering nine hits over seven innings for the complete-game victory. Stocklinski gave up six hits and struck out three in the first four innings, but Julia Nolan '15 (3-1) took the loss after giving up the final two runs in relief. The doubles by Dudzik and Leet marked the first extra-base hits Stocklinski and Nolan had allowed all season.
Amherst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game and held a 2-1 advantage after three, but the Owls scored five times in the fourth inning and added three runs in the fifth for a comfortable 9-2 edge. Katie Bradford '12 gave Keene breathing room with a bases-clearing double in the fourth and broke the game open with a two-run triple in the fifth, while Stocklinski followed each of those at-bats with an RBI single.
The Jeffs made things interesting by scoring four times in the sixth, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ayers and RBI singles from Silkowitz and Leet. Neither team would score in the seventh inning, as Samantha Pratt '12 came on to earn the save despite giving up a leadoff double to Carolyn Miller '14 and a single to Dudzik. Miller finished the game 3-for-4, while Dudzik, Leet and Silkowitz had two hits apiece.
Bradford and Stocklinski combined for seven hits and seven RBIs in the nightcap, while Emily Albin '12 (3-1) struck out six and allowed only two earned runs on seven hits in the first five innings. Arielle Doering '14 (6-1) was dealt her first loss of the season after giving up six runs on six hits in three innings.
