Mammoths Overtaken Late to Drop Senior Day Season Finale Against Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College softball team concluded its regular season on Saturday, falling 6-4 in Game Two and 10-3 over nine innings in Game One.

The Mammoths honored four seniors during the day: senior Abby Kong, senior Abby Moravek, senior Olivia Aitkin, and senior Dylan Briggs.

Amherst finished 11-25 overall and 5-13 in NESCAC play, while Williams improved to 22-14 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

Game Two: Williams College 6, Amherst College 4

*After a walk and a steal pushed sophomore May Mishima to second in the opening frame, Moravek lined a double down center field to plate the runner and put Amherst in front, 1-0.

*Mishima earned her second run of the contest in the third stanza as sophomore Lulu Leppard sent a triple down the center to drive Mishima home, 2-0.

*Junior Emily Borrazzo tightened the gap in the top of the fourth, singling up the middle to lead junior Katie Blanch from third to home, 2-1.

*Moravek returned in the fifth to earn her second and third RBI of the afternoon, smashing a home run over left field to plate both herself and Mishima, 4-1.

*The Ephs got a run back in the top of the sixth as first-year Anabella Rychetsky doubled to right field, driving sophomore Lauren Davis home, 4-2.

*In a heartbreaking final inning for the Mammoths, first-year Haley Barrett reached on a walk, then scored on a double from senior Alysa DeQuiroz. Blanch then tied it 4-4 with a single up the middle, plating DeQuiroz. Finally, with the bases loaded and one out remaining, Rychetsky singled up right-center field to plate both first-year Cassidy Chew and Davis, 6-4.

By The Numbers:

*Rychetsky went 2-2 with 4 RBI, while both DeQuiroz and Blanch went 2-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

*Moravek had 3 RBI for Amherst, going 2-4 with 1 run. Leppard went 1-4 with 1 RBI.

*Blanch recorded 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits over 3 innings, junior Natalie Carter recorded 1 strikeout and allowed 2 hits over 1 inning, and Rychetsky recorded 2 strikeouts and allowed 0 hits over 2 innings for Williams.

* Briggs recorded 1 strikeout and allowed 3 hits over 3 innings and first-year Gwen Religa recorded 4 strikeouts and allowed 4 hits over 2 innings for the Amherst bullpen.

Game One: Williams College 10, Amherst College 3 (9 Innings)

*Williams got on the board first in the top of the second, plating Barrett on a sacrifice fly from junior Justine Dunaway, 1-0.

*A wild pitch led first-year Miya Fujimoto to reach home in the top of the third, extending Williams' lead to 2-0.

*Both sophomore Lauren Ro and Leppard managed to reach third and second, respectively, in the bottom of the frame. But the Amherst bats were unable to plate either runner.

*Amherst grabbed its equalizer in the bottom of the fifth as Leppard sent a double up center field to score both Ro and first-year Julia O'Connell. With Leppard, Moravek, and Briggs on base, first-year Brooke Wild singled up the middle to complete Leppard's run, 3-2.

*In the top of the seventh, first-year Ayane Rokugawa pinch ran for Blanch at first base, then crossed home on a throwing error to equalize 3-3 and take the contest to extra innings.

*After a hitless eighth inning for both sides, sophomore Dani Jackman opened the ninth with a single up the right flank, advancing to third on a fielding error and a bunt. Dunaway then sent a double into open space in left field to plate both Jackman and Blanch. Borrazzo followed up with a double up center field to plate Dunaway, 6-3. Sophomore Aleks Albert then brought in Borrazzo with a single up the right field. Finally, senior Sidney Miller lifted a home run over the middle of the fence to drive in three more runs, 10-3.

*Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, Amherst followed their efforts with two lineouts to close the contest 10-3.

By The Numbers:

*Dunaway went 2-3 with 1 run and 3 RBI, Miller went 2-5 with 1 run and 3 RBI, and Borrazzo went 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

*Leppard went 1-3 with 1 run and 2 RBI, while Wild went 2-3 with 1 RBI for Amherst.

*Senior Sadie Leonard recorded 7 strikeouts and allowed 6 hits over 5 innings, while recorded 0 strikeouts and allowed 1 hit over 4 innings of Eph pitching.

*Moravek recorded 1 strikeout and allowed 9 hits over 8 innings.
