Jeffs Earn 6-3 Win Over Wesleyan, Finish in 5th Place

HARTFORD, Conn. – The sixth-seeded Amherst College men's squash team closed out its 2012 NESCAC Championship run with a 6-3 win over ninth-seeded Wesleyan University Sunday morning, giving the Lord Jeffs a fifth-place finish in the conference tournament.

Amherst improves to 11-7 on the season and will not return to action until Friday, Feb. 17, when the CSA Team Championships begin at Princeton University.

Wesleyan won three of the top five matches, but the bottom four would go to the Lord Jeffs. Senior co-captain Steve Severson took all three games from Mike DeLalio at number two, while David Kerr '14 avenged his loss to Dan Sneed in the Little Three Championships by pulling out a 3-1 victory in the third slot.

Max Kardon '15 split his first two games with Wesleyan's Alex Nunez at number six, but the Amherst first-year eked out a 14-12 win in the third game before sealing the point with an 11-7 result in the fourth. Rodrigo Miranda '14 held on for a 3-2 win at number seven after letting a 2-0 lead slip away, as he outlasted Ethan Moritz in the deciding game, 13-11.

Alex Southmayd '15 and Matt Arnold '12 cruised to 3-0 wins at eight and nine, respectively, with Southmayd wrapping up a perfect 4-0 weekend to improve to 14-2 on the season.
