PRINCETON, N.J. - Dave Kerr '14 (Short Hills, N.J.) and Charles Loesch-Quintin '13 (Philadelphia, Pa.) each recorded a win, but the 18th-ranked Amherst men's squash team opened play at the CSA National Team Championships with a 7-2 loss to #23 Colby.

With the loss, the Lord Jeffs dropped to 11-8 on the season. Amherst, which finished as the runner-up in last year's Summers Cup (C-Division), will once again look to make a run to the consolation finals, beginning with a match-up against Wesleyan University on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Harry Smith '12 headlined the top of the Mule lineup with a 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-7) sweep of Scott DeSantis '15 (Sudbury, Mass.), while William Sullivan '13 handed Steve Severson, who went 3-0 at last season's championship, a  3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7) loss.

Having now won four of his last five matches, Kerr scored one of two Jeff points with a 3-0 triumph over Nat Cooper '12, while Loesch-Quintin improved to 10-3 over his last 13 with a 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4) decision over Trey Simpson '14.

After dropping the first game 11-4, Colby's Will Hochman '14 rallied for a 3-2 victory in the fifth position over Todd Lavine '12 (Atherton, Calif.), while Peter Gabranski '13 handed Max Kardon '15 (Weston, Mass.) just his third loss in his last 11 matches with a sweep in the sixth slot.

With the match knotted at 1-1, Steve Carroll '14 scored a pair of 11-3 and 11-7 wins to close out Rodrigo Miranda '14 (San Salvador, El Salvador), while John Eder '15 outlasted Alex Southmayd '15 (Boston, Mass.), 3-2 (8-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8). Ben York '15 held serve for Colby at the bottom of the order, notching a 3-1 (15-13, 11-3, 5-11, 11-4) decision over Matt Arnold '12 (Larchmont, N.Y.).
