Men's Squash Goes 1-1 at Little III Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Amherst men's squash team split a pair of matches with the #23 Wesleyan and #11 Williams at the Little III Championships, scoring a 6-3 win over the Cardinals before dropping a 9-0 decision to the Ephs.

In the first match of the afternoon, John Steele '14 got Wesleyan off on the right foot, sweeping Steve Severson '12 (Mercer Island, Wash.), 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-3). Scott DeSantis '15 (Sudbury, Mass.) responded by rallying from a 2-1 hole, winning the fourth and fifth games against Mike DeLalio '15 11-6 and 14-12 to notch the Jeffs' first point.

Dan Sneed '15 put the Cardinals back on top with a, 3-2 (4-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7), victory over Dave Kerr '14 (Short Hills, N.J.) in the third position, while Amherst's Charles Loesch-Quintin '13 (Philadelphia, Pa.) came back from a 2-0 deficit to Zander Nassikas '14, winning the last three games by scores of 17-15, 11-6 and 11-5.

Continuing the trend of hard-fought matches, Max Kardon '15 (Weston, Mass.) outlasted Jeff Berman '14, 3-2 (11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 12-10), while Alex Nunez '14 handed the Jeffs' Todd Lavine '12 (Atherton, Calif.) a, 3-2 (11-6, 1-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8), loss.

Headlining the bottom of the order, Alex Southmayd '15 (Boston, Mass.) won a back-and-forth showdown with Ethan Moritz '14, 3-2 (10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8), while Rodrigo Miranda '14 (San Salvador, El Salvador) and Matt Arnold '12 (Larchmont, N.Y.) swept their Wesleyan counterparts in the eighth and ninth positions.

In the nightcap, Will Morris '12 got the Ephs off to s strong start, handing Severson a, 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9), loss at the top of the order before Kevin Chen '15 and Taylor Foehl '14 scored points for Williams with sweeps in the second and third slots.

Andy Maruca '14 bested Loesch-Quintin, 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10), to keep things rolling for the Ephs before Nick Marks '13, Alec Greaves-Tunnell '13 and Julian Drobetsky '13 won in three games at five, six and seven.

Down 2-1 to Jared Zuckerman '12 in the eighth spot, Miranda forced a fifth game with an 11-9 victory before eventually falling 11-8 in the final frame. Nick Greaves-Tunnell '15 put the wraps on Willaims' victory with a 3-0 decision over Arnold.

Amherst will next compete at the NESCAC Championship hosted by Trinity on Feb. 3-5.
