Jeffs Come up Short at #13 Brown, 6-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – First-year Alex Southmayd bumped his winning streak to four matches, but the 22nd-ranked Amherst College men's squash team dropped to 3-5 on the season with a 6-3 loss to 13th-ranked Brown University Wednesday afternoon.

Southmayd was involved in a close match at number eight, but he came away with a 3-0 (11-8, 13-11, 11-8) victory against Brown's Philip Holberton. The Amherst first-year improved to 5-1 and has won each of his past four matches.

Picking up his fourth win of the season was Amherst senior co-captain Todd Lavine in the number six matchup. After Lavine took the first two games by scores of 11-2 and 11-8, Brown's John Overbeck rallied to win the third, 11-3. The Lord Jeff captain would close out his victory in the fourth frame, holding on for an 11-9 win.

Accounting for Amherst's third point was Charles Loesch-Quintin '13, who needed only three games to get past Tucker Bryan at number five. The Amherst junior won his games by scores of 11-6, 11-5 and 11-8, marking his second consecutive victory of the year.

Amherst will try to snap its four-game losing skid when it serves as a host site for this weekend's Pioneer Valley Invitational. The Lord Jeffs will first take on Hamilton College on Friday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m.
