AMHERST, Mass. – The 22nd-ranked Amherst College men's squash team moved its record to 3-3 on the year with an 8-1 loss to 19th-ranked Bates College Saturday afternoon.
The only match that required five games resulted in Amherst's lone point of the day, as Rodrigo Miranda '14 came out on the winning end of a great battle with Bates' David Born '13 at number seven.
Miranda dropped his first game (11-8) but rebounded to take the next two, 11-8 and 11-6. After Born tied things up with an 11-7 victory in the fourth game, Miranda sealed a point for the Jeffs with an 11-9 result in the deciding frame.
Six of the remaining eight matches required four games, but the Jeffs came up short on all six despite putting in some strong performances. Amherst's Scott DeSantis '15 won his first game at number three, but R.J. Keating '13 came back to win the remaining three in nail-biting fashion (11-8, 12-10, 14-12).
Similarly, Matt Arnold '12 edged out a 13-11 win over Jason Shrubb '15 in the first game at number eight, but the Bates rookie battled back and took the next three (11-7, 11-3, 11-8). Kristian Muldoon '14 and Walter Cabot '13 earned 3-0 victories for the Bobcats at numbers two and six, respectively.
The Lord Jeffs will look to get back on track when they travel to take on 13th-ranked Brown University on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
